Systematic Desensitization in Anxiety Treatment

Systematic desensitization is a kind of behavioral therapy used in the field of psychology to help patients successfully conquer phobias and other panic disorders. Pioneered by a South African psychiatrist named Joseph Wolpe, this type of therapy treats a patient by gradually exposing him as to the he fears. The idea behind this therapy is that the more someone exposes to his feared object, the greater able he becomes to tackle the reason for anxiety to see how to approach his feelings.

This method is also called "graduated exposure therapy". Quite understandably, patients must first be trained to calm down and manage their fear before they are actually exposed to the feared object or situation. Once the coping skills have been taught, the individual will then utilize them to reply towards the feared object and then try to overcome tough feelings including anxiety.

As you can imagine, just about all phobia patients have been deliberately trying to avoid the causes of their fears, for example spiders, dogs, snakes or situations like finding yourself in a confined space, amongst crowds or in high places. This purposeful escape, however, doesn't enable them to conquer their anxieties, and they eventually want to handle the root cause of their problems.

There's also several patients who've tried distraction techniques to cope with their anxiety. Distraction methods, as its name may suggest, mostly involve trying addictive behaviors such as alcohol consumption, smoking, or even taking drugs. Traditional medications can as well be be used to treat the phobic type of anxiety, however they actually slow down the patients' minds in order to adjust its exaggerated a reaction to the stimuli.

The key in systematic desensitization would be to gradually, instead of quickly, expose the patients to the phobic objects. When you are slowly forced to confront what they fear, most patients are able to turn from reconciling, tolerating, to finally accepting the object. If this way is applied prematurely or with no precaution towards the patients, the end result could be dangerous or even traumatic.

Along with systematic desensitization, some other treatment techniques in many cases are used in the same time frame. These include relaxation methods such as breathing techniques, or reinforcing positive thoughts. Another effective technique is called cognitive reappraisal. In this technique, the patient is needed to imagine what's going to happen when his feared object is right in front of him. Following the actual exposure, the patient is asked to compare his overstated imagination against his actual reaction throughout the exposure. It's which may produce an astoundingly serene impact on the patient.

Despite its sensitive nature, systematic desensitization is an extremely safe way of anxiety treatment when applied with professional care. Rather than deliberately avoiding the origin of fear, anxiety patients are in possession of an option to shoot straight into the main of their problems.
