What Can Cause A Phobia?
A phobia is a fear, anxiety that for most people is debilitating and life
changing. But let's just explore the whole concept of fear for a second. Fear is
nice. Fear is definitely an emotion that protects us when we are in danger.
Imagine a world with no fear, and you imagine an enormous amount of lawlessness
and anarchy. Without fear, we would have little if any incentive to behave and
protect ourselves. Fear is our brain's way of protecting us.
Through the ages we now have learned to become scared of some things and
situations. It is fear that protects us from snakes, sharks, and situations that
can harm us. We are right to be afraid of snakes--many turn out venomous and
even if they don't kill us, we all know that at best we'll feel pain. Similarly
we all know when we fall from the great height, the chances are we will break a
leg or even die. So in these situations we're right to feel fear, because it
protects us.
Most people don't particularly like spiders or snakes, however they don't suffer
from a major phobia. So when does a normal fear become a phobia, and what causes
some people to develop a phobia every day situations and objects?
The answer to what can cause a phobia is specific to every individual, but
certain situations may bring about the problem. For instance, a person who
experiences a panic attack in an elevator might avoid taking an elevator next
for fear of experiencing another anxiety attack, even though environmental
surroundings probably played no role in the initial attack. The person will,
perhaps subconsciously, blame the elevator for that attack, and ultimately the
elevator and the anxiety attack become so interlinked, that soon anxiety when
elevators and enclosed spaces has developed, and also the individual now suffers
from claustrophobia.
A phobia can also be inherited, in other words taught. Take the case of Brian,
an 11yr old boy who's scared of flying. Exactly why is an 11yr old so afraid of
flying? The solution might be that his mother can also be afraid. We learn from
our parents, and have confidence in them to protect us. Therefore, if our
parent, who's supposed to protect us, is afraid of something, we learn that it
should be harmful and that we too ought to be afraid of it. The big danger
here's that what might be a gentle fear in a parent, can develop into a full
debilitating phobia in a child.
The thing that phobias have in common is that they are psychological, and
therefore the treatment of phobias lies there. By understanding why we are
afflicted by a specific phobia, we are able to begin to treat it. Among the best
methods for treating phobias is by using hypnosis. Hypnosis functions by
re-training your brain subconsciously to react to the phobia differently. By
doing it subconsciously, a lot of the strain and anxiety is taken out of the
therapy for that client--for many people, even talking about their phobia may
cause severe stress.
